Most people are familiar with life-insurance; it's that very boring subject about getting money from the insurance company when you die. It's a lot more complex than that unfortunately, and there are many different types of life-insurance. The one this article is about is term insurance, and being a life insurance policy you have to pay a premium, and in exchange for that the insurance company guarantees to pay you an agreed sum of money. The difference between term insurance and, for instance, whole life insurance is that term insurance only lasts for a fixed length of time. If you die before that time, hooray, your descendants get the money to blow on a world cruise. If you die only a few minutes after the term expires however, they get precisely nothing. You are entitled to ask what sort of nutters buys insurance like this, and why should they? Well the answer is quite simple. It's cheap. If you are looking for just life cover, it is many times cheaper than a whole of life premium for the same amount of cover. So, if you are a relatively young person and you have commitments such as mortgage payments and children to support you may well consider this type of policy because if you die whilst you are still relatively young you can leave quite a substantial inheritance without it having cost you a great deal of money. After all, by the time the insured term is over it is reasonable to assume that the mortgage will be paid off and that the children will be able to support themselves. Okay, if you don't die then congratulations are in order, but you won't get the lump sum that your neighbour who bought a whole of life policy will plump for, but then again by the time he or she gets it inflation will have whittled it down to a fraction of what it would have been worse 30 or 40 years ago anyhow and you will have had the peace of mind of knowing that your family was covered for a very reasonable sum of money, far far less than your neighbour paid!
